For the past few years we have had mostly static Christmas display (see pics page) with several inflatables on our front lawn, a snow machine, bubble machine, and a bunch of lights randomly thrown up.
In 2008, we decided to go a little more high tech (not quite as far as Danny De Vito in Deck The Halls) but the goal was to have a computer driven light show synched to music playing over a low power FM transmitter. With a little (OK a lot) assistance from some of the friendly folk at do it yourself Christmas we were able to build 4 Renard 16 Controllers, which were controlled by Vixen software.
For 2009 the plan is to go even bigger and to use the display to help raise funds for a Child based charity. We now have a Santa statue which children will be able to sit and have their photo taken.
